Every year, Resolution, a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way, brings into sharp focus how separation and divorce can be managed in a way that avoids unnecessary conflict and supports healthier outcomes for all those involved.
When is Good Divorce Week 2025 and what is the theme?
Good Divorce Week 2025, is taking place from 10 -14 November 2025, and the theme this year is “The Resolution Code” – a timely reminder of the ethos and practices designed to make the process of separating more constructive, respectful and future-focused. As a result of the growing legal emphasis on Non‐Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR), we are seeing a transformation in the approach towards family law disputes in England & Wales, making the principles of the Code of Practice even more relevant.
Why the theme matters for Good Divorce Week
Good Divorce Week focuses on raising awareness about how separation need not be bitter, wasteful or damaging.
The theme of the Resolution Code is perfectly aligned: if the process of divorcing and separating is guided by positive values, families can emerge with less damage, better futures and stronger foundations for co-parenting, financial stability, and personal recovery.
The role of Non-Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR)
An important backdrop to this is the increasing push for Non-Court Dispute Resolution (NCDR) in family law. NCDR encompasses processes such as collaborative law, mediation, arbitration and early neutral evaluation.
The changes to the Family Procedure Rules 2023 (effective April 2024) reflect this: there is an expectation that parties in financial remedy and children’s cases consider NCDR at an early stage – proceedings can even be adjourned by the courts to allow NCDR to take place.
The family courts are overwhelmed at present, and the recent announcement that the London Financial Remedies Courts will be operating reduced sitting days and double-booking cases, only serves to highlight the important role that NCDR plays in resolving family disputes.
In Summary: Separation need not be destructive
Good Divorce Week 2025 reminds us all to embrace the Code as the framework for better separations. Combined with the growing shift away from litigation towards NCDR, the message is clear: separation need not be destructive and can be dealt with in a way that maintains dignity, lessens damage and creates a positive foundation for the future.
Thackray Williams supports Good Divorce Week and our legal professionals subscribe to the Resolution Code – where suitable, we always promote early exploration of NCDR, enabling couples to navigate the pressure and stress of separation more amicably, and with less conflict.
