After graduating, Claire worked both in the UK and abroad before retraining as a lawyer. Claire joined Thackray Williams in September 1997 as a Solicitor in the Family Department, before becoming an Associate Solicitor within the Private Client department in 2006.
Claire’s work involves the setting up of trusts, including Discretionary, Interest in Possession, and Bare Trusts. Claire advises trustees of their obligations, as well as the tax implications of trusts, Claire also prepares the relevant (file)tax returns and provides guidance on how to administer the trusts, some of which will last for many years.
Striving to provide excellent customer care, Claire puts her clients’ needs first at all times. Part of Claire’s job is to make sure she fully explains any technical law issues to her clients, ensuring they understand the impact of these on their individual circumstances. Often Claire’s clients find they need to understand (a) complex legal position, for example, when their partner has died, and it can be very confusing for them. Claire also has very sophisticated clients who wish to gain an understanding of trust law as part of a dedicated tax planning initiative on their part. She must ensure all are satisfied with her advice and that it suits their purpose.
Claire’s work is varied and intellectually challenging, she enjoys the client contact and being able to help people wherever she can. Claire also enjoys working in a knowledgeable and experienced team, the benefit of which, she says, enables her to utilise the collective knowledge and a spread of skills within the department. It also means she is able to assist her colleagues where possible.
